Niskerone - John-Henry Bartlett

“I hate being called the King of Drum ’n’ Bass because it’s disrespectful to other great DJs out there. The moment they say you’re king, they put you on a pedestal and the only way is down from there.”

– NISKERONE aka Mark Stevens (in a Cape Argus interview on being dubbed ‘King of underground Drum & Bass jungle’), but looking at NISKERONE’s long list of accomplishments, that definitely does not seem to be the case as this talented DJ needs no introduction where it comes to the world of Drum & Bass.

NISKERONE had his start on the dusty streets of Mitchell’s Plain in the heart of the infamous Cape Flats. NISKERONE has an energetic and innovative style of mixing and has entertained crowds at festivals and on dance-floors around the world. The man behind ‘It Came From The Jungle’, NISKERONE started a weekly residency at Fiction DJ Bar in May 2006, after identifying a need in Cape Town for a Drum & Bass night catering to the lighter side of the genre. Aside from pleasing hundreds of revelers each week, it also secured him slots alongside industry leaders such as Pendulum, Busta Rhymes, The Bloody Beetroots, DJ Fresh (UK), Dieselboy, Sigma, Cutline, and many more.

In 2008, NISKERONE took his energetic live sets to the crowds of Europe on his first European tour. In 2009, he visited Europe again and performed in Belgium, Holland, Germany and Sweden and performed at Spain’s renowned 40 000 strong Monegros Desert Festival for the first time, where he has been invited back to perform five times in the past – a major achievement seeing as the festival rarely features returning consecutive DJs.

Locally, NISKERONE has received headline status at nearly every major festival since 2010, including the likes of Rocking The Daisies, Earthdance, Synergy, Rezonance, OppiKoppi, Ultra SA, Mad Decent Block Party and many more. Besides tearing up dance floors in clubs across South Africa on a weekly basis and creating mayhem on festival stages, ‘It Came From The Jungle’ is now in its eighth year with its legendary weekly slot at Fiction in Cape Town. Aside from all this, 2012 also saw NISKERONE touring Europe from July to September, and again in November. Apart from playing at the first Cape Town Electronic Music Festival at the start of 2012, he also played at the Monegros Desert Festival in Spain again, the Laundry Day Festival in Belgium and the Zurich Street Parade in Switzerland. He played at renowned clubs across the world, including Amnesia in Ibiza, Razzmatazz in Barcelone, Cheeky Monday in Amsterdam and SALA Industrial Copera Club in Granda and shared stages with the likes of The Prodigy, The Wu-Tang Clan, Skrillex, Sub Focus, Netsky, Doctor P, Eskmo, Tinie Tempah, Zedd, Steve Aoki, and many others.

NISKERONE started 2013 with a bang when he performed once again at the second Cape Town Electronic Music Festival in February. He interviewed Skrillex as part of a Bridges for Music workshop in Langa, and joined him on stage on his Mothership SA Tour in Cape Town. ‘It Came From The Jungle’ featured Dub Phizix as its first international in February, and he released his first EP with partner SFR, entitled Lost Memories. In 2014, NISKERONE continued his monthly residency on 5FM, South Africa’s biggest commercial radio station, for its second year and also performed at the legendary First Ave in Minneapolis, USA, as well as major festivals in South Africa. He is currently working on his ‘Niskerone presents Universes’ production with his team.
